How AI Tools Are Changing Small Business Websites in 2026

AI website builders and content tools are everywhere. Here's what they actually do well, where they fall short, and why a good developer is still worth having — from someone who uses AI daily.

There’s a version of this article that tells you AI is about to replace web developers entirely, and you can have a fully functional business website built in ten minutes for free. You’ve probably seen that version, shared breathlessly across LinkedIn.

This isn’t that article.

I use AI tools every day. They’ve changed how I work, genuinely. But I also see what they can and can’t do for a small business website, and there’s a significant gap between the marketing claims and the reality. This is an honest look at where AI is genuinely useful, where it falls short, and what that means for your business.

Where AI Is Actually Helping

Let’s start with the real wins, because there are plenty.

Content production has changed considerably. AI writing tools can produce a solid first draft of a services page, an FAQ, or a blog post in seconds. That doesn’t mean you publish it as-is — you absolutely shouldn’t — but the blank page problem is largely solved. For small business owners who struggle to find time to write website copy, this is a genuine improvement.

Image generation has its uses. Tools like Midjourney and Adobe Firefly can produce concept images, placeholder visuals, and creative inspiration quickly. For a business that needs imagery and can’t afford a professional photoshoot for every page, this is useful. It’s not a replacement for authentic photography of your actual business, but it’s better than stock photos that look like stock photos.

AI chatbots on websites are improving. Embedded assistants that can answer common questions, pre-qualify enquiries, and handle out-of-hours queries have become much more reliable in the last year. For service businesses with repetitive enquiries — what are your hours, how much does X cost, do you cover my area — a well-configured chatbot reduces manual workload meaningfully.

AI-powered search is changing who gets found. Google’s AI Overviews now appear on a significant proportion of informational searches. When someone searches “web designer near me” or “how much does a website cost UK”, they often see an AI-generated summary before any traditional results. Businesses whose sites are structured to answer specific questions clearly are getting cited in those summaries. This is a real advantage — if your site is set up for it.

All of this is real, useful, and worth taking seriously. AI tools have lowered the time cost of several tasks that used to be slow.

What AI Can’t Do For Your Website

Here’s where the gap between the promise and reality opens up.

Build Something That Actually Performs

The platforms pitching “AI-built websites” — Wix’s AI builder, Squarespace AI, and others — are generating sites quickly, but quickly and well are not the same thing.

Performance matters. Google’s Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking factor, and slow sites actively harm your search visibility. AI-generated websites built on template platforms carry all the same bloat problems those platforms have always had. The AI is filling in your content and choosing a layout, not optimising the underlying code.

A site built specifically for your use case, loading only what it needs, behaves very differently in search results from a generated site with unnecessary JavaScript, oversized images, and a theme designed for a different business category. The difference is measurable and it compounds over time.

Handle Accessibility Properly

This is a specific example that illustrates a broader point.

AI image generation tools produce images. They do not produce meaningful alt text. The alt text — the description read by screen readers, and also used by search engines — has to be written by someone who understands what the image shows and why it’s there. An AI image tool that creates a hero image of two people shaking hands doesn’t know whether that image should be described as “two business owners at a networking event in Norfolk” or “customer signing agreement with contractor”. That context matters, for accessibility and for SEO.

The same problem applies to structured content more broadly. AI tools can produce words, but words arranged without a coherent information architecture — a clear hierarchy of headings, logical page flow, content structured around how your customers think about their problem — don’t convert. Writing and structure are different things.

Replace Genuine Integration Work

This is where the “AI website builder” pitch falls apart most visibly.

Earlier this year we built the booking system for Fakenham Dog Field in Norfolk. The brief: let customers book and pay online, then automatically generate a gate access code linked to the Paxton access control system on site. No manual steps in between.

No AI website builder was going to do that. No template platform handles Paxton integration. No plugin marketplace had what was needed. The solution was custom code, built to handle exactly that workflow, deployed on Cloudflare Pages with Stripe payments handling the transaction side. It works without anyone needing to be involved. Customers book, pay, and receive their access code automatically.

For the J&J Horseboxes marketplace, the requirement was a custom listing platform for horsebox hire — search, listing management, owner dashboards, enquiry handling. The nearest template marketplace solutions would have required significant monthly subscription costs and still wouldn’t have fit the way the business actually works.

These examples aren’t unusual requirements. Lots of small businesses have specific needs that don’t fit a generic template, and when you need something to work a particular way, “AI will generate a site for you” doesn’t solve the problem.

AI tools can suggest keywords. They can’t do proper search intent research, understand the competitive landscape for your specific location and service, or build a site architecture that maps correctly to how your customers look for what you offer.

The businesses getting traction in search in 2026 are the ones with sites that answer specific questions clearly, load quickly on mobile, are structured for AI Overviews, and build authority through real content over time. That requires decisions, not just generation.

How We Actually Use AI at FWD

I’m not arguing against AI tools. I use them constantly. But I use them as part of the build process, not as a substitute for it.

AI helps me draft copy quickly, which I then refine and tailor. It generates image concepts that we develop properly. It assists with code generation for repetitive patterns, which I review and adapt. It helps with technical research and documentation.

What it doesn’t do is make decisions about what a business actually needs, optimise performance for a specific deployment environment, handle custom integrations, or understand why a particular client’s customers behave the way they do.

The result is that I can work faster — and pass that efficiency on in pricing — without compromising on the quality of what gets built. A site produced with AI assistance and professional oversight is better than a site produced by AI alone, and better than a site produced without any AI tools, because the developer’s time is spent on the things that actually matter.

The Honest Question

If you’re weighing up whether to use an AI website builder or work with a developer, the right question isn’t “can AI build me a website?” It can. The question is: “does the result of that website serve my business properly?”

A site that exists is better than no site. But if your website is supposed to generate enquiries, handle bookings, represent a business you’re proud of, and compete in search for your local market — the bar is higher than what current AI builders reliably deliver.

If you’ve had an AI-generated site built and it’s working well for you, that’s genuinely worth knowing. I’m curious. But most of the business owners I speak to who went that route are back asking questions within a year.

What This Means Practically

A few things worth taking away:

AI tools for content are worth using. If you’re writing your own copy, use them to get started. Just don’t publish the first draft.

AI chatbots are worth considering. If you get the same five questions by email every week, a chatbot can handle them. This is a genuine time saving.

AI website builders have real limitations. For a very simple presence with no functionality requirements, they’re fine. For anything that needs to perform in search, integrate with your tools, or handle specific functionality, the limitations will surface.

Working with a developer who uses AI properly is not more expensive than the alternative. It should be faster, because AI-assisted development moves quickly when a developer knows what they’re doing with it.

If you want to understand what the right approach looks like for your specific situation, get in touch. I’ll give you a straight answer about what you actually need, including if that’s not a full custom build. No obligation, no sales pitch.
